Concealed Weapons Permits

NEW LAW EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2003

Procedure for obtaining a permit to carry a concealed weapon:

  • Concealed pistol application kits are provided during normal business hours by the following:
    • County sheriffs 
    • Local police agencies 
    • County clerks 
  • Concealed pistol application kits are free of charge to individuals who wish to apply for a license to carry a concealed pistol.
  • Concealed pistol application kit includes the following: 
    • Written procedure to obtain a concealed pistol permit 
    • Application form written procedure to appeal and the appeal process form if denied a concealed pistol permit 
    • Fingerprint card (fingerprints taken by local sheriff’s department) 
    • Reference numbers for current pistol safety training entities Processing Application
  • Applicant files their application with the county clerk in the county in which the individual resides. This must include: (1) a copy of the certificate of completion of the pistol safety training course, and (2) a passport quality photograph. 
  • Applicant pays fee of $105 to the county clerk at time of filing (a renewal is the same fee)
  • Applicant receives a receipt for payment. 
  • Applicant provides receipt and fingerprint card contained in kit to the sheriff department for fingerprinting. 
  • Applicant has fingerprints taken by sheriff department. The sheriff department only takes fingerprints from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Click Here for additional information regarding the sheriff department's fingerprinting schedule.
  • Sheriff department forwards fingerprints to the Michigan State Police for processing. 
  • Once county gun board receives the fingerprint comparison report, they will issue or deny the license within 30 days.
  • Applicant picks up permit from County Clerk.  All licenses must be signed in the presence of the county clerk.
  • Fee for a replacement license is $10.

8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Iosco County Sheriff Department
